Fry Sight Word Lists for Testing FREEBIE 1, Fry Words!

One of my earliest products were my functional sight word task cards and they are part of many of my larger bundles in my store. I looked at them the other day and they seemed a little worn. And of course once I got started, of course it became a total redo of the whole set. And then it got complicated because these little packs were part of several bundles and my recreation turned them from 3 individual products to 2. So I wanted to share what the revision means for all of you and then I can focus on the original purpose of my post which was a freebie roundup for holiday activities to keep you going through these last weeks before vacation.

I posted it on my HeidiSongs Facebook Page for some feedback, and then made a few changes and re-posted it. Since then, we have done a few more for homework, and a few in class. It seems that these worksheets are just the right amount of challenge for the children; they are not too hard and not too easy. They can be done independently with most of them getting them right. They are almost self-checking, in that when the child is done, he sees that the word itself comes up. My intention was to allow teachers to tell the class that they should either color it or not color it, at their discretion, based on their own classroom management needs and how much time they need to fill. Children doing this at home for homework can then color the outside sections whether or not they wish to, and that is exactly what my students did, of course! We are including a couple of them as freebies so that you can try them out and see if your students respond to them as well as mine did. I find them to be easy to use and very flexible as far as classroom management is concerned.

Learning the sounds of letters and developing phonemic awareness and phonics skills are crucial steps in early reading. This is where sight words come in. Fun sight word activities draw on both kinaesthetic and visual learning and help develop fluency when reading. Often high-frequency words, students learn these words by sight — when you show a student a sight word, they should be able to read it back to you quickly, almost instantly. As Literacy Online states: The best way to learn sight words is through lots and lots of repetition, in the form of sight word games and activities. The last thing you want to do is bore your students with rote learning of sight words. This is made easy in the New Zealand context as Ready to Read books match purposely with each group of sight words. We have selected six fun sight word activities that you could easily introduce to your classroom or home! Give students coloured chalk and their list of sight words around five sight words is a good number at one time.

Valentine’s Day Sight Word FREEBIE!

The final 6 weeks of school are here… time for the final stretch. So many of my friends are just a few words away from knowing all 54 of their words, but I have a few who have a way to go. This got me thinking… dun, dun, dun, DUN!!! For those kiddos who have a road ahead of them, I simplify. I select words each week for the student to receive intensive intervention lessons. Each student still has their word rings that we started the year with which have 54 words on it, but I have highlighted the words that I want them to master that week. This is the freebie that I shared awhile back that explains how these word rings work. I am so grateful for the ESGI program. Then I printed them 2 to a page so the cards were smaller and they would fit into the badge pocket. I decided every one of my students would get one of these.
